Despite being surrounded by abundant freshwater resources, Kenya faces a challenge : under-consumption of protein, particularly Tilapia fish. Statistics, according to Principal Secretary Blue Economy Betsy Njagi show that Kenyans consume only around 3.5-4 kg per capita income compared to a continental average of 10 Kgs/person/year and a global average of 20 Kgs/person annually ,far below the recommended 12Kg by the World Health Organization(WHO).This deficit translates to a protein gap, leading to under nutrition especially among children and pregnant women.

While red meat remains a popular protein source, its production often comes with a hefty enviromental price tag. Cattle ranching contributes significantly to green house emissions accelerating climate change.

Global Tilapia: A Sustainable Protein Powerhouse

Tilapia is a readily available and affordable freshwater fish and can be a game-changer for Kenyan protein needs. Here’s why:

  • Higher Protein, Low Enviromental Impact: Tilapia boasts a complete protein profile, containing all essential amino acids. They are also relatively inexpensive to farm, requring less land and water compared to livestock. Tilapia farming in Kenya generates significantly lower greenhouse emissions making it a more climate-friendly protein choice.
  • Combating Undernutrition : Tilapia is rich in essential micronutrients like vitamin B12,iron and zinc crucial for healthy growth and development. Increased tilapia consumption can significantly reduce childhood stunting and improve overall health outcomes.
  • Sustainable Aquaculture :The rise of responsible aquaculture practices from Kenyan Tilapia Companies like Global Tilapia allows for tilapia production to meet growing demand without depleting wild fish stocks.
